When any one of us, or someone we love, is facing something hard emotionally – it’s only natural to want or hope for expert-level, professional support to guide us forward. A wise and experienced counselor, wellness or medical professional can often work miracles in our lives.
Sometimes our excitement about professional options can lead us to overlook something else powerful in its own right: the beautiful community support right around us. In his 1995 book “Careless Society,” Dr. John McKnight from Northwestern University argued that the growing dominance of professionalized services could be having the inadvertent effect of discouraging neighbors, family members and “normal” folks from recognizing the powerful supportive roles they also can play in the lives of people suffering.
That’s why we started this mentoring network – to help us recognize and remember the power we ourselves can have in supporting others who are seeking healing, if only as a “trusted friend” along the way. If this is something you think you’d like to be involved with, contact us at sustainablyheal@gmail.com. We would love to connect with you and help you connect with others who have been walking a similar path – whether now, or in the past.
