Our experience has been that deeper healing for children and young adults almost always flows more easily when we as parents are also paying attention to our own path of healing. We know that “what we do” can oftentimes “speak” more forcefully to the minds and hearts of those we love then “what we say.” Here are some resources that have helped us learn how to keep a mindful and measured balance in our parenting.
- Beyond Consequences, Logic and Control by Heather Forbes Looking for fantastic hands on parenting help…. go no further. Although this information is a valuable resource for all types of parenting challenges, the material presented here on “attachment and trauma” is applicable across the board and most especially for more severe challenges. As the mother of ten children, and a professional teacher for over 25 years, I have found this resource to be full of clear guidance and simple tools which, when carefully considered, lead to more peace and ease in my own parenting and teaching endeavors. - Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting, Jon Kabat-Zinn with Myla Kabat-Zinn. Hyperion, 1997. One of our favorite books on parenting gently, presently and tenderly. Jon wrote this with his wife. It’s a treasure for any parent trying to figure out how to be more gentle and present with children.
